In Tanzania, 70% of the population are farmers, and are thus dependent on an intact environment and lucrative markets. This makes them vulnerable to environmental changes and economic pressures, like climate change and volatile markets. The world is currently facing the greatest environmental crisis of our time, leading to weather extremes and loss of biodiversity. At the same time, unsustainable farming practices are turning the soil we depend on into desert. Already under pressure, our highly inequitable food system deprives farmers of any perspective. Without access to lucrative markets and with farms consistently losing their fertility, many leave their rural areas in search of better opportunities. With large scale agricultural companies taking over bigger parts of the market, communities and land will be further depleted, and the quality of the food will continue to decline. The missed opportunity to mitigate and adapt to climate change bears the risk of degrading the global community.
The solution is to increase the uptake of organic agriculture practiced by smallholder farmers in Tanzania through an increased focus on the domestic market. SAT Holistic Group Ltd acts as a catalyst for this market segment by creating incentives for producers, processors, and retailers to join this field. With a growing organic demand in the country, more farmers will join us in protecting Tanzania’s soil, water, and biodiversity. To further push the organic movement, and keep rural life attractive, the farmers gain a voice in the food system. We foster the growth of a strong and well-organized farming community. We follow an iterative approach with strong feedback loops to constantly increase our impact. With the feedback generated from the market, we’re a sparring partner of SAT NGO, meaning organic knowledge is continuously produced, refined, and finally shared with the organic movement.
The SAT NGO has been advocating regenerative farming practices in Tanzania for more than 10 years. What we’ve learned: Organic farming clearly benefits the environment and the people. We found that 97% of SAT’s participants could improve their situation in the following ways:
• 76% of people would eat healthier
• 38% would have an increased income
• 61% could reduce their input costs
• 59% could reduce water consumption
Now it is time to scale up! With our farmer-centered social business in place, we’re finally able to reach more people and have an even greater impact. By 2023, we will reach a minimum of 3,500 additional farmers. By improving their market access and livelihoods, we’ll demonstrate a system where farmers are more engaged over the whole value chain. Moreover, SAT Holistic Group Ltd acts as a catalyst within the domestic organic market. This will create incentives for other producers, processors, retailers, and customers to join. As well as the increased uptake, the movement will also benefit from knowledge fueled by market feedback and provided by SAT NGO’s Innovation Accelerator.
